questo è un romanzo popolare tra la fine dell'800 e gli inizi del '900, che racconta la vicenda di una giovane donna e insieme testimonia l'emergere della presenza femminile nel nostro Paese, la sua prima emancipazione sociale e culturale. Quando, all'inizio della storia, Rossella "entra in società" (l'alta società a cui appartiene la sua famiglia di industriali genovesi), siamo negli ultimi anni dell'Ottocento e tutta l'Europa vive il conflitto tra la "classe alta" attaccata ai suoi privilegi e i moti di una società civile, lontana da quei privilegi, che freme per affermarsi. Ma in quegli anni tumultuosi del "mondo nuovo" novecentesco ci sono anche alcuni, pochi, aristocratici illuminati. Tra loro spicca il conte e medico Riccardo Valeri, destinato ad avere uno spazio ed un peso specialissimo nella vita privata e in quella pubblica di Rossella, nelle sue scelte umane e professionali, e non da ultimo nei suoi sentimenti. La nostra eroina, grazie ad un cuore coraggioso ed una mente libera, non esita a rompere i legami con la sua famiglia, spinta dall'innamoramento impetuoso per Giuliano, un giornalista di umili origini, ambizioso e senza scrupoli. Rossella si allontana così dai suoi cari, non prestando ascolto neanche a chi, come Riccardo Valeri, riconosce fin dal primo minuto la natura ambigua dell'uomo per cui ella sembra disposta a sacrificare tutta se stessa. La vita mette più volte a dura prova la giovane: Giuliano non tarda a riservarle terribili delusioni e Rossella è costretta a misurarsi con la povertà, con la sofferenza e con la discriminazione riservata, in quegli anni, alle donne che tentano di farsi strada nel mondo con le loro sole forze. Paolo giorgi vedovo con una figlia a carico di sedici anni: Cristina, va a vivere in un appartamento adiacente a quello di Laura Del Fiore, separata e con due figli: Emanuele sedici anni e Nina di sette. Laura e Paolo, come vicini di casa, pur non incontrandosi mai, si detestano cordialmente; il volume della musica troppo alta, l'antenna parabolica su uno dei terrazzini confinanti, sono queste le futili ragioni per le quali litigano scambiandosi bigliettini e minacce tramite persiana. I due però per un caso si incontrano fuori, prima in una videoteca, poi in un supermercato e il loro è davvero un colpo di fulmine, tant'è che fanno di tutto per riuscire a conoscersi e ad ottenere un primo appuntamento. Quindi, non sapendo di essere i tanto detestati vicini di casa, passano la loro prima serata al termine della quale, dopo un bacio romanticissimo sotto casa, scoprono la terribile notizia. Paolo è il vicino ignorante e troglodita, quello della musica a tutto volume a tutte le ore del giorno e della notte; Laura è la vicina saputella e puntuta, la stessa che gli ha intimato di togliere l'antenna parabolica dal suo terrazzino spedendogli il regolamento condominiale! E questo è solo il primo ostacolo che Paolo e Laura dovranno superare per poter vivere il loro amore, che comunque si dimostrerà molto più forte delle liti tra vicini e regolamenti condominiali. I loro figli adolescenti, Emanuele e Cristina rappresentano subito l'altro problema, anche di una certa consistenza. I due ragazzi, infatti, oltre ad essere vicini di casa, sono anche compagni di scuola. Organizzato, ordinato e ossessionato dalla pulizia e dall'igiene lui; disordinata, approssimativa e scompigliata lei, vivono tutte le incertezze e le paure dell'età adolescenziale e soprattutto si detestano cordialmente e certo non vedrebbero di buon occhio un amore tra il proprio padre vedovo e la propria madre separata. Così Paolo e Laura sono costretti a vedersi in clandestinità: come quindicenni fanno l'amore in macchina, o nelle stanze d'albergo fino a quando esasperati non decidono di confessare subendo tutte le conseguenze del caso: malumori, rappresaglie, musi lunghi e incomprensioni. Solo la piccola Nina si dimostra contenta di quella notizia e sposa subito la causa. Mentre la storia d'amore tra Paolo e Laura prosegue, ora alla luce del sole, tra mille difficoltà tra le quali anche il ritorno a sorpresa dagli Stati Uniti di Riccardo, l'ex marito di Laura che porterà non poche complicazioni, naturalmente un affollato quanto variopinto contorno di personaggi ruota intorno alla coppia. Primi tra tutti Michele e Monica rispettivamente miglior amico di Paolo e miglior amica di Laura. E poi ci sono i due mondi chiusi e paralleli dove Laura e Paolo passano molto del loro tempo. La redazione del giornale femminile "Tu donna" dove Laura lavora e la piscina dove Paolo allena con passione una squadra piuttosto scadente, di giovani pallanuotisti. Come si capisce in questa storia, tutti, ma proprio tutti, sono alle prese con l'amore. Uomini, donne, bambini, adolescenti, anziani, tutti agitati, travolti e sbatacchiati dalla forza dei sentimenti. I nostri personaggi attraversano sconvolgimenti emotivi, felicità inaspettate, ma anche dolori profondi sempre con un passo leggero e ironico sottolineato da sogni e immaginazioni improvvise e punteggiato dalla musica, vero altro protagonista della storia. Sì perché è spesso anche attraverso le canzoni che esprimono i loro stati d'animo e così può capitare di vedere Paolo ballare in strada cantando "Stasera che sera" dei Matia Bazar, mentre aspetta Laura per il suo primo appuntamento; oppure Laura intonare a piena voce "Come saprei" di Giorgia sul terrazzino della sua casa quando con Paolo le cose non sembrano andare nel verso giusto; o ancora Cristina che saltando e ballando per la casa canta "Bella" di Jovanotti, dopo aver finalmente passato la sua prima notte d'amore.
